My web presence has varied quite a bit over the past 20+ years of “my-life-on-the-internet.” I first got a digital online version of my brief alt-media print zine setup around 1998 – shortly thereafter setting it up as my first ever domain name: www.ELFIS.net
Soon I was buying more and more domain names for more and more projects, turning the Elfis zine website into a network hub for weird alt-media websites. I think at the height of my web-work I had maybe 70 or more domain names that were all interconnected and would re-syndicate each-others content using early XML and RSS feeds.
With the ever worsening trollish hack-attacks on vulnerable websites, coupled with the rise of social media sites draining away the content that used to be based at people’s personal websites, I’ve increasingly pulled back (after each hack) from the scope of such interconnected website activities. I’ve gotten sucked in to the big social media sites like most people… and I’ve lamented that drain’s diminishing of my efforts at curating my own websites.
As much time as I’ve thought I might have to spend rekindling that effort (during these Strange Days of Covid-Lockdowns), life pulls me back from making any progress. Its a slow process anyway, so I should just embrace the small steps that help make larger strides possible.
To that end… for several months now I’ve been planning on using my own nostalgic archival backup work on my personal files as the potential driver to get back to it! Back in late June I created a TON of draft posts of things I was coming across and wanted to share… but here it is mid-August and I’ve still not posted any of those drafts.
So, may this signal my effort to renew these efforts.
