 BOSTON MARATHON BOMBING(S)

  • Boston runners were warned on Saturday (Audio)
Mike Heiliger, 59, said a woman holding several bags was telling runners who were picking up their pre-race packages in downtown Boston on Saturday (April 13) that they were going to die if they participated in the event.“I was downtown on Saturday and you know, you see these people on the street and think it’s just some nutbar,” he told The Chief from his Boston hotel on Monday. “It was a little creepy because you can identify who the runners are and I heard her say to this runner two feet away from me that, ‘If you run tomorrow you’re going to die.’”

  • JFK Library opens exhibit on Cuban Missle Crisis

The JFK Library and Museum in Boston has a new exhibit that tells the story of the Cuban missile crisis through once-secret White House recordings and documents. It opened Friday after an earlier debut at the National Archives in Washington. It depicts President John F. Kennedy and his advisers in deliberations as the United States and Soviet Union were in a nuclear standoff during 13 days in October 1962.

Listening stations with tapes of Kennedy’s National Security Council meetings are the centerpiece.

A recreated fallout shelter and one of the first aerial reconnaissance photos of Soviet missile sites under construction in Cuba are also part of the presentation.

There are also personality studies that the Central Intelligence Agency did on Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev and Cuban leader Fidel Castro.

15 Apr 2013 University of Mobile’s Cross Country Coach, who was near the finish line of the Boston Marathon when a series of explosions went off, said he thought it was odd there were bomb sniffing dogs at the start and finish lines. “They kept making announcements to the participants do not worry, it’s just a training exercise,” Coach Ali Stevenson told Local 15. Stevenson said he saw law enforcement spotters on the roofs at the start of the race. He’s been in plenty of marathons in Chicago, D.C., Chicago, London and other major metropolitan areas but has never seen that level of security before. “Evidently, I don’t believe they were just having a training exercise,” Stevenson said. “I think they must have had some sort of threat or suspicion called in.”
‘Marathon as Dry-Run Disaster’ 21 Apr 2008 Today thousands of runners and hundreds of thousands of spectators are unwittingly taking part in a planned disaster. Yet, they are not just safe from harm (except for the variety brought on by running 26.2 miles), they also are participants in an event that will make the citizens of Greater Boston safer in case of a natural catastrophe or terrorist attack. Primary responsibility for the health and well-being of both runners and spectators in Boston rests with Boston Emergency Medical Service (BEMS), along with the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and Emergency Management Agency. According to BEMS chief Richard Serino, his department considers events like the marathon and the Fourth of July celebration as “planned disasters” – safe, controlled environments that present “an opportunity to test some things you would never want to test in a real disaster.” …Massachusetts is better prepared for a real disaster because every Patriot’s Day and Fourth of July is treated as a “disaster.”

15 Apr 2013 (British Columbia) Runners getting set to take part in the Boston Marathon were warned beforehand that they were going to die, said a Squamish resident who took part in the race. Three people were killed and more than 140 were injured when two bombs exploded near the finish line of the famed 42.2-kilometre running event on Monday (April 15). 16 Apr 2013 In New York City, the New York Police Department immediately beefed up security at major attractions, hotels and high-traffic spots yesterday. “We’re stepping up security at hotels and other prominent locations in the city through deployment of the NYPD’s critical response vehicles until more about the explosion is learned,” NYPD spokesman Paul Browne said. After cops were briefed by NYPD counterterror officials about “what the concerns were in Boston, what to look for here,” Browne said, critical response vehicles swarmed Times Square, the Empire State Building and Radio City Music Hall. Up to 100 cops cars rallied at one point in Times Square.

–’That area is pretty much going to be locked down’ –Governor Deval Patrick 16 Apr 2013 Boston will be largely open for business on Tuesday, but so much will be different, as a wounded city awakens to higher security and heightened vigilance following the deadly bombings at the Boston Marathon. Heavily armed police will be out in force. Bags will be searched on the MBTA. And the area around Copley Square will remain a crime scene, closed to the public. Not since the Sept. 11 attacks has Boston witnessed such a show of martial power coupled with a sense of vulnerability and grief. The scores of rifle-wielding state troopers, National Guard members in fatigues, and municipal SWAT teams who descended on the city Monday will continue to patrol on Tuesday, particularly around the finish line of the marathon in the Back Bay.

15 Apr 2013 The bombs that exploded near the finish line at the Boston Marathon Monday are considered a terrorist attack by several Capitol Hill lawmakers, even as President Obama refrained using that description earlier in the day. “I think it has all the hallmarks of an act of terrorism,” House Homeland Security Committee chairman Mike McCaul, R-Texas, said. “Multiple bombings simultaneously. A mass casualty event – spectacular event – that’s what they always try to focus and target. So, to me, it’s got all the hallmarks of that and I believe that it is and the only remaining issue is who are the perpetrators and what’s the motivation behind it.”

Republican money backs immigration push 15 Apr 2013 As Congress readies for a drawn-out immigration debate, an expanding network of Republican fundraisers is pressing for a path to legal status for millions of immigrants living in the United States illegally… In most cases, the donors have ties to Wall Street and businesses that want more high- and low-skilled immigrants in the nation’s legal labor pool. Backed by the U.S. Chamber of C*merce, these business-minded Republican fundraisers say they’re getting a relatively receptive audience in the face of an undeniable new political reality. [‘Immigration reform’ is code for corpora-terrorists getting a whole new pool of cheap labor — with US taxpayers footing the bill for the extra costs of that gift — while ALL workers’ wages are driven down. That’s been Wall Street’s goal from the get-go, and why Obama supports it. –LRP]
